Insurance,
in human.
You don’t need to know all the jargon to get started. Here’s a friendly introduction to the questions worth asking.
A few words you’ll hear.
Insurance is an agreement with an insurer. You pay for a policy, and the insurer agrees to cover certain losses under that policy’s terms. The details matter, especially what is covered, what isn’t and how much you would pay yourself.
Premium
The amount you pay for your policy, often monthly or annually. It is different from the amount you might pay when making a claim.
Deductible
The part of an eligible loss you pay before the insurer pays its share. Deductibles can differ within the same policy.
Coverage limit
The most a policy will pay for a particular covered loss or category of loss. Some types of property have separate limits.
Exclusion
Something your policy does not cover. Ask about exclusions that could affect your home, activities, health or business.
What are you looking to cover?
Your vehicle
Auto insurance can include liability coverage and protection for your own vehicle. Requirements and available options differ by province or state. Ask about drivers, how you use the vehicle and any exclusions before choosing a policy.
Your home and belongings
Homeowners, condo and renters policies cover different needs. Discuss the building where relevant, your belongings and personal liability. Flood, earthquake and other risks may need separate coverage.
The people who depend on you
Life insurance may pay a benefit to your beneficiaries if you die while covered. Term and permanent policies work differently. Discuss how long you need coverage, your budget, eligibility and any medical questions with a professional.
Your business
Business insurance depends on what you do, where you work and the risks involved. Liability, property, professional services and employees may each need attention. Explain your activities in detail so you can ask about the right options.
These are general explanations. Products, terms and requirements vary across Canada and the United States. An insurance professional can explain what applies to your situation.
Compare more than the price.
A lower premium can come with a higher deductible, lower limits or different exclusions. When looking at options, ask:
- Are these quotes based on the same information and coverage limits?
- What would I pay out of pocket if I needed to make a claim?
- Which losses are excluded or need extra coverage?
- Are there payment fees, cancellation terms or waiting periods?
- When would the policy actually start, and how will I get confirmation?
Ask for anything you don’t understand to be explained in writing. Take the time you need to review the policy documents.
A little preparation helps.
For an initial conversation, it helps to know your current coverage, when it renews, and what you’d like to change. Have a rough idea of your budget and the questions you want answered.
